Heart of West Coast Mountain Bike Country
Stunningly located overlooking the Tasman Sea, in the heart of West Coast mountain bike country, Breakers is a great place to base yourself while you explore and experience some fantastic mountain biking. Back Country Exploration Stephen and Jan both mountain bike and love to share their knowledge of the area with their guests. You can mountain bike straight from Breakers to a couple of the local tracks or head into the hills for some real back country adventure and exploration. There is an abundance of gold and coal mining history on the Coast leaving some fantastic trails for exploration, together with great forestry roads and logging tracks. Numerous Tracks and Trails There is some 550kms of coastline full of trails on the West Coast, starting with Karamea in the north and finishing at Haast in the south. Historic Areas
Many of these tracks have historic value as they were initially made for the gold, forestry and coal industries and are now used mainly by hikers and bikers. The tracks and trails are generally well maintained benched, 4-wheel drive or single-track, best described as back country exploration. Throw in some purpose built mountain bike tracks and great forestry roads and you probably have the best region in the south island to be a biker in. Most tracks and trails will test your biking skill and endurance and get you back to the essence of being a mountain biker. The numerous trails cover the whole spectrum of mountain biking be it fast flowing, technical, easy benched, rocky, creek crossings – you name it, depends on what you prefer and your skills. Bike Hire Hokitika Sports World have bikes available for hire. Wild West Adventures in Greymouth has also started bike tours in the back country of Greymouth and Hokitika and has a selection of mountain bikes available for hire. Relaxing Beachfront Location Enjoy a sunrise at Breakers up over the mountains, a hearty breakfast in the dining room with some great sea views and then head out for the day, morning or afternoon - time is yours. Stephen and Jan can help with suggestions and may even come along with you to share their favourite trails. Come back to Breakers and enjoy a leisurely walk on the beach or sit back, relax and enjoy those fantastic sea views and a wonderful West Coast sunset out over the sea.
